Word reaches me from Albedo One, Ireland’s Magazine of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror, that they are launching the Aeon Award for 2006-2007, with a grand prize of €1000, as well as guaranteed publication in a future issue of Albedo One. This is a competition for short fiction in any speculative genre.
The inaugural award, for the period 2004-2005, was won by Julian West for his story My Marriage, eventually chosen from a shortlist by well-known writer Ian Watson, with the award ceremony being part of 2005 Worldcon SF Convention in Glasgow. Julian has also won the other Irish SF short story competition, the James White Award.
Full guidelines for submissions can be found on the Albedo One website. In brief, however: stories should be no longer than 8000 words, can be sent either snail mail or electronically, and require an entrance fee of either €5, STG£4 or US$6. Stories will be judged by a panel of judges on a ongoing basis, with the final deadline for submissions being June 2007. The final shortlist of stories will once again be sent to Ian Watson, who will chose the winner. The top three stories will be published in Albedo One.

P-CON IV, a Literary SF Convention to be held in Dublin in March 2007, is very happy to announce that Kim Newman will be attending the convention as Guest of Honour. Kim’s work seems to extend into every possible end of the various related genres of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and especially Horror, and he is one of the world’s greatest experts on SF film TV. Frank Darcy, the chairman of the fourth Phoenix Convention, has announced the date and venue for next year’s convention. The con will take place in Wynn’s Hotel in Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1 over the weekend of the 10th & 11th of March 2007. The change of location from the Ashling Hotel, home of the three previous conventions, is partially due to the Ashling being closed for most of 2007 for renovations. Wynn’s Hotel is even closer to the centre of Dublin city, being a few seconds walk from O’Connell Street, and located on the Luas line.
The convention committee hope to have guests to announce in the very near future, and the convention website is being constructed by the fabulously talented Ian Sheppard, of this parish, even as we speak. Memberships for the con, which are still only €25, will shortly be available via the site’s PayPal join-up facility just as soon as is humanly possible, but can also be secured by sending your name and details, along with a cheque or postal order for €25 to:

There will be a special showing of Nosferatu in The Sugar Club in Dublin’s Leeson Street. What makes this showing of the film, made in 1922 by F. W. Murnau, particularly noteworthy is the fact that it has a musical accompaniment, composed by Peter Sheridan and Cormac McCann, and performed live on the piano at the performance.
Nosferatu is actually the first movie made based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, although it had its name changed, as Stoker’s widow wouldn’t give permission for Murnau to make a film of the book.
The performance is at The Sugar Club on Leeson Street, Dublin 2 on Sunday the 26th of February at 8 PM, and admission is €12.

The 2005 Horrorthon Film Festival programme is now available from their website. Horrorthon, a horror film festival held annually around Halloween since 2001, takes place this year from Friday the 28th to Monday the 31st of October in the Irish Film Institute, under the directorship of Ed King, as always.
A full list of the films being shown can be found on the Horrorthon website. The list includes, however, titles like Satan’s Little Helper, 2001 Maniacs, Cannibal Holocaust, Jaws, and Friday the 13th.
