The Navan Film Festival to be held in Diamond Cinema, Kennedy Road, Navan, County Meath on the 16th August 2006. According to Festival Director Paul Cotrulia, The Navan Film Festival was created to offer exposure to genre films which are often overlooked by the traditional festival circuit.
The festival’s programme includes action, science fiction, fantasy and animation as well as panels, parties and special guests. Amongst the films being shown are American SF thrillers Into the Maelstrom and Microgravity and the award-winning Canadian SF short Cost of Living, all receiving their Irish festival premiere. Also showing are Irish-made fantasy films The Four Horsemen and Nowhere Man, directed by the festival chief Paul Webster.
The festival kicks off with a champagne reception at the Diamond Cinema on the night of the 15th of August at 11:00 pm followed by a special screening of Ireland’s first martial arts movie Fatal Deviation at midnight.

Occasionally I get mail from far-flung parts of the globe, far beyond the shores of Ireland. This is from one of them. Dawn Wiercinski, who is Screenplay Competition Director of the Austin Film Festival which is being held in Austin, Texas from the 19th to the 22nd of October, 2006, asked me to pass on the following message.
The Austin Film Festival is searching for the best Sci-Fi script containing one or more of the following elements: fantasy, myth/legend, horror, science fiction, surrealism and fantastical storytelling. Enter your script into either Adult/Family or Comedy category, and you may also choose to be considered or the Sci-Fi Award. Winner will receive $2500, and much more. Please email dawn[at]austinfilmfestival.com, or check out our site at www.austinfilmfestival.com.
Don’t say I don’t do my bit for international goodwill!

Warner Brothers have very kindly donated ten sets of double tickets for the preview screening of V for Vendetta to the raffle and charity auction at P-CON next weekend. The screening will take place in a Dublin city cinema on the evening of Monday the 13th. As timing would have it, Leah Moore & John Reppion, who are attending the con, will still be in Dublin, so will also be attending the preview.
The tickets will be available both as raffle prizes and also in the charity auction. The charity auction, in aid of the Oesophageal Cancer Fund, will take place at 4 PM on Saturday afternoon, and the raffle at the closing ceremony on Sunday evening.
Other donations to the charity auction include original artwork from some of Ireland’s leading comics artists, numerous signed books from the attending authors, as well as books form some writers who were not able to attend, like Kim Newman and Ian Watson, and original dust jackets from the first editions of Terry Pratchett’s The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic.
So, if you’re not already signed up for P-CON, what’s keeping you?

There will be a special showing of Nosferatu in The Sugar Club in Dublin’s Leeson Street. What makes this showing of the film, made in 1922 by F. W. Murnau, particularly noteworthy is the fact that it has a musical accompaniment, composed by Peter Sheridan and Cormac McCann, and performed live on the piano at the performance.
Nosferatu is actually the first movie made based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, although it had its name changed, as Stoker’s widow wouldn’t give permission for Murnau to make a film of the book.
The performance is at The Sugar Club on Leeson Street, Dublin 2 on Sunday the 26th of February at 8 PM, and admission is €12.

As part of the Holylands Arts Festival in Belfast from the 2nd to the 9th of October, there will be a Sci-Fi Extravaganza night in the Menagerie, University Street, on Tuesday 4th October at 7.30 PM.
Although there is a full programme of events on the site, this, their only SF event, doesn’t get any further details beyond the listing, where it is clearly marked with a X to let people know it’s not for the norms! My information leads me to believe that this will be a Doctor Who night, though, run by Michael Perkins, chairman of Mecon 9, coming up next August. Michael is one of the most energetic of the SF fandom folk in Northern Ireland, so it promises to be a good night.
