Pre P-CON Signing in Chapters

Chapters bookshop on Parnell Street, Dublin 1, have organised a signing event on Friday 28 March with three of the authors who will be attending this year’s P-CON SF Convention, which takes place that weekend in the Central Hotel in Exchequer Street, Dublin 2.

The authors signing include C.E. Murphy, the convention’s Guest of Honour; Juliet E McKenna; and Oisín McGann. The signing will take place from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, after which all parties involved will be going over to the Central Hotel for the official launch of P-CON at 8.00pm.

Mr Amperduke GN from Bob Byrne

Bob Byrne, the man behind MBLEH! and The Shiznit, not to mention 2000AD’s Bob Byrne’s Twisted Tales, has finally finished his magnum opus, the 160-page graphic novel Mr Amperduke, which he will be officially launching on Thursday 14th February at 8pm in the Bernard Shaw in Portobello, on the outskirts of Dublin City. Further information about Mr Amperduke, along with directions to get to the launch, can all be found here.

Manga Event at Chester Beatty Library in February

The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle is hosting a Manga & Anime Weekend at the beginning of February.

The schedule is as follows:

6pm: Screening of Naussica of the Valley of Wind (Over 16s)
Screening supported by Tiger Beer

11am: Screening of Astro Boy

2pm: Well known UK comics expert and Manga specialist Paul Gravett will present an illustrated talk on the popularity of this medium.

3.30pm: Demonstration with Manga artist. Details to be confirmed

11am: Screening of Paprika (91 mins) 16 +

1.30pm: Surreal Art of Anime, talk by Paul Watts

3pm: Screening of Angel’s Egg (80 mins) 16+

David Lloyd's Signing Tour of Ireland

Well-known British comics artist David Lloyd, artist on V for Vendetta, amongst much else, is doing a four-date signing tour of Ireland at the end of November, where he will be promoting his latest book, Kickback.

The four appearances are:

Tuesday, 27th November: Central Hotel, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2, 7.30pm. A short talk followed by Q&A and signing.

Wednesday, 28th November: Chapters Bookstore, Ivy Exchange, Parnell Street, Dublin 1, 4.00pm -7.00pm. In-store signing.

Thursday, 29th November: Róisín Dubh, Dominick Street, Galway, 8.00pm. A short talk followed by Q&A and signing.

Saturday, 1st December: Other Realms, Paul Street Shopping Centre, Cork, 12.00pm – 3.00pm. In-store signing.

Dublin City Comic Con 2007

The Second Annual Dublin City Comic Con takes place in the Tara Towers Hotel, Merrion Road, Dublin 4, over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of November.

Guest of Honour is Jim Lee, and other guests include Simon Bisley, Doug Braithwaite, CB Cebulski, Paul Cornell, Andy Diggle, Adi Granov, Jock, John McCrea, Steve McNiven, Mark Millar, Steve Mooney, Ben Oliver, Carlos Pacheco, Nick Roche, Liam Sharp, and Stephen Thompson. SubCon 2007

SubCon, a regularly held comics convention, takes place this Saturday, the 29th of September, in the Central Hotel, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2.

Guests include Ian Boothby, Simon Furman, Pia Guerra, Leah Moore, Steve Niles, John Reppion, and Brian Talbot, as well as a whole heap of local talent, including the incandescent Bob Byrne.

The doors open from 10am to 5pm, and admission is €10.

Mira Furlan Signing in Dublin FPI

Mira Furlan, the Croatian-born actress who played Ambassador Delenn in Babylon 5 and who currently plays Danielle Rousseau in Lost, is doing a signing in Dublin’s Forbidden Planet International branch on Crampton Quay on the 15th July from 3PM to 5PM.

Prior to this, she will be attending the The Memorabilia Show at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, England on the 7th & 8th of July.

When I made my initial listing of forthcoming events for 2007, there were a few pieces of information missing, as various things had not been announced yet. Date and venues have since been forthcoming, as well as further guest information, so here is the updated position on the Irish SF and Comic Conventions for the next 12 months.

Doctor Who Event in Belfast in May

UT Events have announced a major Doctor Who Convention to be held in Belfast in May 2007.

Genesis takes places in Park Avenue Hotel, Holywood Road, Belfast on Sunday 27th May 2007, and guests at the event include Colin Baker, who played the 6th Doctor; Louise Jameson, who played Leela, the companion to the 4th Doctor in 1977 – 1978; and Annette Badland, who played Margaret Blaine, a member of the Slitheen. More information about the guests is available on UT Events’ Guests’ Page.

Prices for the event currently stand at STG£30 for adults and STG15 for children under 12, with under 12s to be accompanied by a paying adult. No Euro prices are listed, but if you multiply by 1.5, you’ll get a general idea of what it costs.

The event runs from 9am until Midnight, and includes Guest Question & Answer Sessions, Autograph Opportunities, Official Photograph Taking and Prize Giveaways.
