Aeon Award

Posted 3 years, 10 months ago on February 25, 2007

The Aeon Award for 2006-2007, brought to you by the wonderful people at Albedo One, is still open for submissions.

The Aeon Award short story competition is designed to promote new writers by raising their profile. But a prize of €1000 for the winner and publication in Ireland’s premier magazine of SF&F for the top three stories – as chosen by renowned SF and fantasy author Ian Watson – doesn’t do any harm either.

The winner will be announced at the upcoming, high profile European Science Fiction Convention in Copenhagen in September 2007. The entry fee is €5 and the contest is open until the end of June next.

More details on the Albedo One website.

David Stewart 1960 - 2006 RIP

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago on October 12, 2006

David Stewart passed away in hospital at 3.35 AM on Thursday the 12th of October 2006. He had been suffering from Oesophageal Cancer for the past twelve months. He was 46 years old.

David is gone, and I really don’t know what to say. He was a larger than life figure in any number of ways. He was very active in SF fandom, not only in Ireland, where he was on the committee for Octocon a number of times, but on the world stage, being much involved with the last Worldcon, and also chaired the (unsuccessful) Irish bid to run Eurocon in 2007. David was also a good friend, and did Deirdre and myself the great honour of being Best Man at our wedding in 2004.

I’ll miss him, and I know many, many people will miss him, all around the world.

The charity auction at Octocon this weekend is for the Oesophageal Cancer Fund. If you wish to honour David’s memory, you might consider bidding on something there, or making a contribution to the charity.

If you wish to express your condolences, please add a message to this entry on my Livejournal, which I know David’s family have already seen.

Here’s a photograph of David that effectively captures his essence. It’s how I remember him: Larking around at a con, in the company of friends.

Ní bheidh a leithead án arís.
We Will not see his like again.

There’s a strong comics theme in this year’s con, not only with comics artist J G Jones at Guest of Honour, but with Irish comics writer Rob Curley, Irish comics writer and artist Bob Byrne, Irish webcomic creators Adam Law & Darryl Walker, and occasional 2000AD & Judge Dredd the Megazine contributors Michael Carroll and Richmond Clements. Even old hand Harry Harrison wrote a few tales for EC Comics, back in the day . . .
