Thanks to the lovely people over at Movies.ie, we have two pairs of tickets for the preview screening of Iron Man movie to give away. The screening will be held at Cineworld Cinemas, Parnell Street, Dublin 1 on Wednesday the 30th of April, so this is going to be a very fast competition!

The Aeon Award for 2006-2007, brought to you by the wonderful people at Albedo One, is still open for submissions.
The Aeon Award short story competition is designed to promote new writers by raising their profile. But a prize of €1000 for the winner and publication in Ireland’s premier magazine of SF&F for the top three stories – as chosen by renowned SF and fantasy author Ian Watson – doesn’t do any harm either.
The winner will be announced at the upcoming, high profile European Science Fiction Convention in Copenhagen in September 2007. The entry fee is €5 and the contest is open until the end of June next.

The Third Irish International Conference will take place over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of September 2006 in the Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.
Speakers include Ann Andrews, whose presentation is entitled Raising a Multidimensional Starchild in a Changing World; Gary Heseltine, who will talk on The History of British Police Officer UFO Sightings; Carl Nally, who will talk on Pilots Reporting UFOs in Irish Skies; and DavidCayton, who will speak on The Silent Killers – Investigations into Strange Animal Deaths and Mutilations in Britain.

A fascinating documentary about the Second Irish International UFO Conference, called Loving the Alien is available from Ronan Gallagher on his Iron Mountain Movies site. There’s even a brief trailer on the site, which is well worth a look.

Bob Byrne, creator of Irish comics MBLEH! and The Shiznit, is the latest comics creator to be highlighted in Judge Dredd: The Megazine’s small press section. Issue #247, now on sale in all good comic shops and newsagents, reprints Bob’s Mr Amperduke story, which originally appeared in Bob’s own comic, MBLEH!.
Bob told me, I heard in January about the plans to include a small press section in the Megazine from a friend in the UK So I mailed the editor with the 6-page Mr Amperduke story and 20 minutes later he replied. It’s going down a treat with the hardcore fans so hopefully it’ll make my next submission easier to swallow.
Responses on the 2000AD forum have been good so far, and, all in all, the rest of the world is finally finding out what some of us in Ireland already knew, which is that Bob Byrne has a unique talent.
Bob had a website that is well worth visiting, and his blog rants are also available through a brand new LiveJournal feed.

Editor Chris Fite-Wassilak writes to tell me about developments at Irish comic This Way Up.
This Way Up is a collaborative comic based in Dublin. Following several characters in their journeys around the city, portions of the original script are given to painters, illustrators, designers, and interested souls who don’t even consider themselves ‘artists’ to respond with their own interpretation. The various work is then reassembled, creating a kaleidoscopic experiment in storytelling and artistic interaction. Each issue skips between the various characters, but follows one character predominantly, giving us access to their dreams and letting their wanderings shape the city.
Issue 1 was launched in February 2005 featuring 12 artists, who introduced us to novel Postman Jimmy and his silent interaction with the walls of Dublin.
Issue 2, released July 2005, had 18 artists depicting the soundings of Radio Pirate Declan.
Now the unpublished Issue 3 is available online! This issue is shaped by the compulsive Postmaster Raymond, and his encounter with the infamous Engineer. Unlike the first two issues, where narrative and artwork are structured around each page, issue 3 is a sort of chronological timeline, with each character occupying a concurrent space on the page: Raymond occupies the top line of every page, while we trade between Declan, the Engineer, (floating crown), Jimmy, and his mates in their simultaneous goings-on.
The website features all three issues available for download, as well as the original scripts, original artwork and alternative pages.
Artists featured in issue 3: Eoin An, Paula Banks, Jagu Bhomra, Bea Brennan, Leo Boyd, graffiti artists Choc and Trader, Nick Cassidy, Emma Fite-Wassilak, Chris Fite-Wassilak, Ruth Lyons, Janto McMullin, Steve McDevitt, Rob Mirolo, Eavan O’Sullivan, Eva Plazewska, Henry Place, Catherine Ryan, and cartoonist for UK publication The Liberal, Ed Scott.

Belfast Science Fiction Group have moved their meetings from their previous venue (of 19 years) in the Monico to the quieter environs of the Errigle Inn on Ormeau Road, Belfast. Call them old codgers if you want, but anyone over the age of 25 who has ever tried to find a pub in a city or town centre where you can hold a conversation at less than a 100 decibels will sympathize.
Meetings are every other Thursday at 8.00 pm and the next meeting will be on 11th May, 2006, with the next one after that on the 25th May, 2006..
