2D - Northern Ireland Comics Festival 2008

The second 2D – Northern Ireland Comics Festival takes place on Thursday 5th, Friday 6th, and Saturday 7th of June 2008 in the Verbal Arts Centre and Sandinos Bar in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Events will include Signings, Sketching Sessions, Workshops, Panels, Dealers, Portfolio Reviews, and an Art Exhibition. Entry to all events is FREE. Not only that, but tables for Creators, Dealers, and Publishers are also supplied free, although there is a limited supply, and it will be allocated on a first come – first served basis.

Guests so far confirmed for the event include:
Charlie Adlard, Bob Byrne, Shane Chebsey, Rufus Dayglo, David Hine, Laura Howell, Ilya, Garry Leach, Alan Martin, Stephen Mooney, Nick Roche, and Stephen Thompson.

Manga Event at Chester Beatty Library in February

The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle is hosting a Manga & Anime Weekend at the beginning of February.

The schedule is as follows:

Friday 1 February: Opening Night

6pm: Screening of Naussica of the Valley of Wind (Over 16s)
Screening supported by Tiger Beer

Saturday 2 February: Manga Day

11am: Screening of Astro Boy

2pm: Well known UK comics expert and Manga specialist Paul Gravett will present an illustrated talk on the popularity of this medium.

3.30pm: Demonstration with Manga artist. Details to be confirmed

Sunday 3 February: Anime Day

11am: Screening of Paprika (91 mins) 16 +

1.30pm: Surreal Art of Anime, talk by Paul Watts

3pm: Screening of Angel’s Egg (80 mins) 16+

Forthcoming Events for 2007

After a protracted break over the winter, I’m back with a list of forthcoming Genre events from now to the end of the year. I’ll be at a lot of these events, so I hope to see some of you there.

2nd Navan Film Festival Focuses on Genre Titles

The Navan Film Festival to be held in Diamond Cinema, Kennedy Road, Navan, County Meath on the 16th August 2006. According to Festival Director Paul Cotrulia, The Navan Film Festival was created to offer exposure to genre films which are often overlooked by the traditional festival circuit.

The festival’s programme includes action, science fiction, fantasy and animation as well as panels, parties and special guests. Amongst the films being shown are American SF thrillers Into the Maelstrom and Microgravity and the award-winning Canadian SF short Cost of Living, all receiving their Irish festival premiere. Also showing are Irish-made fantasy films The Four Horsemen and Nowhere Man, directed by the festival chief Paul Webster.

The festival kicks off with a champagne reception at the Diamond Cinema on the night of the 15th of August at 11:00 pm followed by a special screening of Ireland’s first martial arts movie Fatal Deviation at midnight.

Anime Con for Northern Ireland

On Saturday the 27th of August Tomo-Dachi, Northern Ireland’s first Japanese Animation (Anime) Convention takes place in the city of Derry, run by the Derry Anime and Manga Association (DAMA). The event will run between 11 AM and 9 PM in The Nerve Centre, Derry City, showing anime on two cinema screens. The convention also includes video gaming, a manga (Japanese comics) library of over 200 books, Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh Collectable Card Game tournaments, and Anime/Manga themed quizzes.

Belfast Independent Film Festival does SF

Urban Screen, an independent film festival set up in 2004, and with an annually rotating theme, is concentrating on the Science Fiction genre this year, according to festival founder and co-chairman, Andrew McVea. He adds, “Currently there are no plans to charge for admission – however, venue hire, advertising and film licensing costs may result in the commercialisation of the festival in the future.”

They’ll be showing twelve film over three days, starting with The Day the Earth Stood Still at 10 AM on Friday the 19th of August, and ending with The Incredibles at 7 PM on Sunday the 21st of August. In between, they’ll be showing a broad range of films, including Blade Runner, Brazil, Aliens, and Terminator 2, as well as one each from the Star Wars and Star Trek stables.

Animated Shorts As Part of Dublin Lesbian & Gay Film Festival 2005

As part of the 2005 Dublin Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, there is an 87-minute programme of lesbian and gay animation, called Outline, featuring nine different pieces, ranging in length from Powerplay at three minutes, to Three Months with Pook at thirty nine minutes. Other titles include The Ambiguously Gay Duo – The Third Leg Of Justice, which “gives an insight into the private life of a pair of crime-fighting poofs.” The showing is on Saturday the 30th of July at, 2:30 PM on Screen 1 in the Irish Film Institute on Eustace Street in Dublin’s Temple Bar.

Irish Anime Convention in DCU in November

EirtaKon is a convention devoted to ‘Anime,’ or Japanese-style animation, and will be running from Friday the 11th to Sunday the 13th of November this year, in Dublin City University on Collins Avenue in Dublin 9.

There will be six screens showing anime through the course of the weekend, including some international premieres, along with a dealers’ room, anime enthusiasts from all over Ireland, related gaming events, table quizzes, a Japanese Bazaar, a charity raffle, and much else.

Entrance is 6 Euro for a day or 10 Euro for a weekend. Entrance will include a free con t-shirt, a con pack, free refreshments for the entire con and a special ‘goodie bag.’
