The second 2D – Northern Ireland Comics Festival takes place on Thursday 5th, Friday 6th, and Saturday 7th of June 2008 in the Verbal Arts Centre and Sandinos Bar in Derry, Northern Ireland.
Events will include Signings, Sketching Sessions, Workshops, Panels, Dealers, Portfolio Reviews, and an Art Exhibition. Entry to all events is FREE. Not only that, but tables for Creators, Dealers, and Publishers are also supplied free, although there is a limited supply, and it will be allocated on a first come – first served basis.
Guests so far confirmed for the event include:

2D, the Northern Ireland Comics Festival will take place at the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry in Northern Ireland from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st of April 2007. The event will include feature exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, and portfolio review sessions.
Guests for the event so far include Charlie Adlard (artist – White Death, Astronauts in Trouble, Judge Dredd), Mike Collins (writer/artist – Doctor Who Magazine, Weekly World News), Rufus Dayglo (artist – 2000AD), Simon Furman (writer – Transformers, Death’s Head, Alpha Flight), PJ Holden (artist – 2000AD, The Dandylion) , Garry Leach (artist – 2000AD, Marvelman/Miracleman), John McCrea (artist – Troubled Souls, Hitman), Will Simpson (artist – 2000AD, Hellblazer, Vamps), and Kev F Sutherland (artist – Oink, Beano, Doctor Who Magazine). Speaking about the event, which is Northern Ireland’s first ever Comics Festival, organiser David Campbell said: The trend for comics in the mainstream shows no signs of wearing off. Our aim is to make the festival as accessible as possible by providing a wide range of events catering for all ages – which are completely free of charge. With that in mind we feel that we have created a line up that will be as interesting for a hardcore comics fan as it will for a relative newcomer.

To coincide with Lá ‘le Gaeilge, the Irish Language Day, Filmbase, in association with the St. Patrick’s Festival, are presenting a screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in the Irish language.
The screening is in Filmbase, Curved Street, Temple Bar on Sunday 18th March at 5PM, and tickets cost €7 for adults and €5 for children.

It’s less than 40 days to the next P-Con. This year’s Phoenix Convention, the fourth, will be held in Wynn’s Hotel on Abbey Street in Dublin over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of March next.

The Navan Film Festival to be held in Diamond Cinema, Kennedy Road, Navan, County Meath on the 16th August 2006. According to Festival Director Paul Cotrulia, The Navan Film Festival was created to offer exposure to genre films which are often overlooked by the traditional festival circuit.
The festival’s programme includes action, science fiction, fantasy and animation as well as panels, parties and special guests. Amongst the films being shown are American SF thrillers Into the Maelstrom and Microgravity and the award-winning Canadian SF short Cost of Living, all receiving their Irish festival premiere. Also showing are Irish-made fantasy films The Four Horsemen and Nowhere Man, directed by the festival chief Paul Webster.
The festival kicks off with a champagne reception at the Diamond Cinema on the night of the 15th of August at 11:00 pm followed by a special screening of Ireland’s first martial arts movie Fatal Deviation at midnight.

We are a bit late in reminding you about this, but Science Week Ireland is taking place between the 13th and 20th November next, although there are related events throughout the month of November.
Science Week features “hundreds of fun science, technology and engineering events” all over the Republic. The theme this year is “The Science Behind Entertainment”, focusing on the science behind music, movies and sport. While many of the topics and events are, to be fair, aimed at younger people, there are events to appeal to people of all ages. Details of what is happening in your area are available at the Science Week 2005 website.
One of the events that caught my eye – and this is indeed a bit of local partisanship on my part – is the University of Limerick Science Fair on the 13th November at the University of Limerick campus at Plassey, Limerick, which features, amongst other items, talks on Superhero Science, Dive with Sharks and Magic Science and Mystery, a chance to meet NASA astronaut Dr. Stephen Robinson, science workshops, planetarium shows, steam engines, rescue helicopters and a Giant Bubble Show.
And, yes, there is face painting and a bouncy castle.

The 2005 Horrorthon Film Festival programme is now available from their website. Horrorthon, a horror film festival held annually around Halloween since 2001, takes place this year from Friday the 28th to Monday the 31st of October in the Irish Film Institute, under the directorship of Ed King, as always.
