Granted that this writer only remembers him from his incarnation on television in the 80’s, but according to a story on Radio Netherlands Media Network Blog, podcasts of Kenny Everett’s comic creation Captain Kremmen, which aired on London’s Capital Radio in the 70’s and 80’s, are now available to download at the Gcap Website

Terry Pratchett’s agent, Colin Smythe, writes to say that Publishers Weekly have listed their Listen Up Awards for 2005. There are three winners in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section. These are Terry Pratchett’s Thud!, read by Stephen Briggs, Ben Bova’s Mercury, read by Stefan Rudnicki, Arte Johnson, and Moira Quirk, and Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: The Tertiary Phase, read by Adams, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern, Susan Sheridan, and the rest of the cast.
As it happens, one of the members of the rest of the cast is Roger Gregg, the prime mover behind Ireland’s Crazy Dog Audio Theatre, who have themselves recently won an award for their most recent production, The Last Harbinger. It was awarded the Audio Comedy Of The Year, otherwise knows as the Golden Giggle award for the year’s best comedy on Irish radio, in the 2005 Hot Press awards. The Last Harbinger was originally broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 in May 2005.

Neil Gaiman was at RTÉ in Dublin for their arts programme Rattlebag. He was interviewed by Myles Dungan before a live audience on Tuesday night, and the interview was broadcast on Thursday the 17th November at 2.45 PM. You can listen to it on their archive, here.
There was a 35-minute Q&A session after the interview, with question asked by members of the audience, including one by Yours Truly. There are plans to put this on the RTÉ site, and I’ll let you know if it turns up.

As part of their series of Public Interviews, RTÉ’s Rattlebag are presenting a public interview with Neil Gaiman, which is open to the public, in Studio 1 in the Radio Centre at RTÉ’s main studio complex at Montrose, Donnybrook, Dublin 4. The interview will be at 7 PM on Tuesday the 15th of November, and, although there isn’t an actual signing scheduled afterwards, Neil says I don’t know if there’s a signing of any sort afterwards, but will be happy to scribble on anything that comes my way.
If you’re interested in tickets, ring the Rattlebag office on 01 208 2822. However, I believe that interest has been high, so you’d probably want to ring them right now!

Although you might miss it if you blinked, Irish actor David Murray had the screen all to himself for a few moments in the most recent Batman movie, Batman Begins. If you’re wondering where he was, he was the character identified in the titles as ‘Jumpy Thug,’ and is seen shooting a submachine gun wildly in the air in the docklands, shouting “Where are you?” just before Batman’s head appears, upside-down, in costume, saying “Here.”
David Murray is actually no stranger either to interesting bit parts in the movies, or to Irish SF audiences. He was Merlin’s assistant in the 2004 film King Arthur, and also had parts in Cowboys & Angels and Hunted. He is, however, probably better known to Irish SF aficionados as First Officer Hoax Minstrel, the puffy-sleeved shirt wearing romantic male lead from Crazy Dog Audio Theatre’s Big Big Space radio series, along with many other roles in Crazy Dog productions.

Crazy Dog Audio Theatre’s latest production, The Last Harbinger, will be broadcast on RTE Radio 1 over the five Tuesdays in May.
Subtitled “An Elegy For Shadows Fleeting In Twilight”, the five half hour episodes from Tuesday 3rd May to Tuesday 31st May at 7.02 PM.
It’s described as a
viciously dark satire on an “advanced” civilisation hurling towards self-destruction as it rapaciously destroys its environment and it’s people.
So there! Go look at their website at for more information. You can find it at www.crazydogaudiotheatre.com.

Due to being largely absent last year, I never got to report on the doing of Roger Gregg, Ireland’s own SciFi Radio superstar. His Diabolical Playhouse series came and went on RTÉ Radio without my really getting to say anything about it, which is a shame, as Roger really does fantastic work. Still, at least I get a chance to tell you about his new venture. As you may know, Roger is one of the voice actors on the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio series, about which he says this:
The Quandary and Quintessential Phases of the Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy are coming to BBC Radio 4 in May.
The cast features Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, Geoff McGivern as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Susan Sheridan and Sandra Dickinson are playing Trillion and Tricia McMillan. Other stars in the cast include Christian Slater, Jonathan Pryce, and Griff Reese Jones. Roger Gregg of Ireland’s Crazy Dog Audio Theatre is again in the cast revisiting his role as Eddie the shipboard computer and a host of other small parts.
He also adds this, though:
Also coming this May to RTE Radio 1 Tuesday nights at 7, is the new Crazy Dog Audio Theatre science fiction adventure series. Crazy Dog will be back on the air with a brand new series featuring Morgan Jones, David Murray, Deirdre Molloy, Georgina Miller, Karen Ardiff, Simon O’Gorman and with special guest appearances from Melinda Peterson and Phil Proctor of RUGRATS.

Although this obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with Irish comics, any of you who are fans of the work of Alan Moore might be interested to know that he is taking part in a six-part series of interviews being broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from the end of this month.
The series, called Chain Reaction, has a Well-Known Public Figure interview another WKPF. After that, WKPF #2 interviews a WKPF of their choice, and so on. So, starting at 6.30 pm on Thursday the 30th of December 2004, Jenny Éclair interviews Jimmy Carr, Jimmy Carr interviews Johnny Vegas, Johnny Vegas interviews Stewart Lee, Stewart Lee interviews Alan Moore, Alan Moore interviews Brian Eno, and Brian Eno interviews someone else. As
I’m a fan of Jimmy Carr, Alan Moore and Brian Eno, that sounds like just the thing for me! You can read
all about it in this article from The Alien Online
Yes, the “certain Dublin-based TAO contributor” he’s referring to is
actually me…
