Gay Trekkies host 40th Party for Star Trek

Posted 4 years, 4 months ago on August 24, 2006

The first ever episode of Star Trek was shown in the USA on 8th of September, 1966.

40 years after the first USS Enterprise took off, there is one Star Trek fan group still meeting in Ireland. The Dublin-based Gay Trekkies are a group of gay, lesbian, and bisexual fans of the show, meeting regularly to watch and discuss Star Trek. To celebrate the anniversary of the show, the Gay Trekkies are organising a party at Outhouse (the LGBTQ Resource Centre, in 105 Capel Street, Dublin 1).

Alien food is promised, as well as the opportunity to browse through some memorabilia, and watch some of those classic episodes again. The celebration takes place on Saturday the 9th of September 2006, between 1-5 pm. The Gay Trekkies are hosting the event, and they wish to extend their invitation to anyone who has ever enjoyed Star Trek, regardless of their expertise on the series, their orientation, species, or planet of origin. The event is free, and everybody is welcome.

Flann O'Brien on RTE on Tuesday Night

Posted 4 years, 9 months ago on April 1, 2006

Today, the 1st of April, marks the fortieth anniversary of the death of Flann O’Brien, according to many the finest writer to come out of Ireland. To mark the occasion, RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcasting service, is to show an hour-long documentary in the Arts Lives stream on RTÉ 1 on Tuesday the 4th of April at 10.15 PM.

From the 1st of May, as part of the international One City, One Book movement, Dublin City Council, along with Dublin City Libraries, and with the assistance of Penguin Books, are attempting to get all of Dublin reading Flann’s At Swim Two Birds. More information about that here.

In my own opinion, Flann is easily Ireland’s greatest writer, and I can probably prove it! While the BBC Big Read event was running, BBC Northern Ireland was running their own poll, looking for Ireland’s favourite Irish book. I ended up writing an article about this for the BSFA’s Matrix magazine, which I have archived here, and which certainly shows that Flann’s books, and especially The Third Policeman, are held in high regard here in Ireland. Internationally, sales of this book have soared when someone was seen reading it in the TV series Lost, and it previously got a boost in sales after being mentioned in one of Alan Moore’s books.

Here Comes the Wagon... on DVD!

Posted 5 years, 2 months ago on November 8, 2005

We have been informed – and thanks to Andrea for the information – that copies of the much-anticipated Wanderly Wagon DVD have already been spotted in branches of Golden Discs.

What is Wanderly Wagon, you might well ask? As the opening song proclaimed, it is “...the most unusual wagon you ever knew.” Pádraig O Méalóid once described it in these terms: “Think Dr Who with a fat man instead of The Doctor, a grandmother instead of the companion, a horsedrawn wagon instead of the TARDIS, and absolutely no budget whatsoever, and you’re still miles out.” (WW purists may, however, quibble with this, especially as the status of the Godmother character as an ancestor was never established as canon.)

For those of you from outside Ireland, or who were born in the last twenty years, or are not acquainted with the vintage years of Irish television, Wanderly Wagon was a children’s programme that ran between 1968 and 1982 on the Irish national broadcasting station, RTÉ. It chronicled the adventures of the inhabitants of the titular horse-drawn wagon, who journeyed through a fantastic, magical version of the Irish countryside battling baddies, frequently utilizing the medium of song to point out the error of their ways. I should also point out that it was a horse-drawn caravan that was capable of both atmospheric and interplanetary flight, so there was the occasional foray into space.

The regular human members of the crew were the matronly Godmother, the greedy but good-hearted O’Brien and the musical Rory, although Rory left in 1974, ostensibly to help the moon mice. (This writer actually remembers the episode.) Other members of the cast included Judge, the dog, and Mr. Crow, a crow who lived in a cuckoo clock, as well as the regular guest villain, Ssssneaky Ssssnake. These puppet members of the cast were the work of Eugene Lambert, who also played O’Brien. The wagon itself was on public display for many years parked outside the RTE headquarters in Dublin and has achieved such a position in the national consciousness that it has, on occasion, been exhibited in the National Museum of Decorative Arts & History.

Wanderly Wagon even had a spinoff, Fortycoats & Co, that ran in the eighties. More information on the show is available on the Wanderly Wagon page on the excellent Irish TV site.

Banopticon

Posted 5 years, 9 months ago on May 1, 2005

This is a Doctor Who convention, being held in Bangor in Northern
Ireland, and is the second one there, the previous one being in 1998.

Guests include sixth Doctor Colin Baker, along with one of his
companions, Nicola Bryant, who played Peri. The adult membership fee
is STG£20, and the site also says, rather intriguingly, "Children
under 16yrs will cost £14.00." There’s an upper limit of 150 members,
too.

Originally this was to be held on the previous weekend, but this
would have clashed with Worldcon in Scotland, so was moved. Hopefully
we’ll see more Doctor Who conventions springing up all over Ireland,
with the success of the new series. Wasn’t the Dalek episode on
Saturday fantastic? I wish them well with the event, although we
won’t be able to make it. Maybe next time…

What: Banopticon 2005
Where: Marine Court Hotel, Bangor, Co Down, Northern Ireland
When: August 14th 2005
Who: Colin Baker (6th Doctor) & Nicola Bryant (Peri)
How Much: STG£20
Website: Banopticon Website
