Various Current and Forthcoming Events

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago on October 23, 2006

Here’s a quick overview of a few current and forthcoming event here in Ireland for the rest of 2006, in roughly chronological order.

HORRORTHON: IFI 26 October – 30 October

The ninth annual Horrorthon film festival takes place in the Irish Film Institute, Eustace Street, Dublin 2 from the 26th October to 30th October 2006.

CORALINE: Various Venues October – November 2006

Neil Gaiman’s novel Coraline, adapted for the stage, and performed by Púca Puppets, is touring the country, and has been for a wee while now. You can catch it in the Project Arts Centre until the 28th of October, then in the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, Co. Wicklow on the 1st of November, the Source Arts Centre in Thurles, Co. Tipperary on the 9th of November, and finally in the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan, Co. Meath from 16th November to 18th November.

WORLD GHOST CONVENTION: 27 October – 3 November

The World Ghost Convention 2006 takes place in Cork City Gaol, Sunday’s Well, Cork on Friday, October 27th at 8 p.m.

Full details here.

BELFAST BOOK FAIR: 11 November

Michael Perkins of Queen’s SciFi says:

Just a quick note to let people know that the 24th Belfast Book Fair (promising “Paperbacks, hardbacks, novels and books on every conceivable subject”!) will be held in the Wellington Park Hotel, Malone Road, on Saturday 11th November from 10am – 5pm.

Admission is £2 (£1 concession).

ONE MAN STAR WARS: SPIRIT 13 November – 25 November

Charles Ross’s One Man Star Wars should be fairly self-explanatory. It’s running in Spirit on Middle Abbey Street for two weeks during November, and you can book tickets here

DUBLIN COMIC CON 25 November

I’ve already mentioned this here, but also wanted to mention that the previous night, Friday the 24th November, there will be a big Charity Table Quiz in aid of Crohn’s Disease.

John Hendrick of The 3rd Place says:

We’re hosting a pub quiz on Friday the 24th of November upstairs in the Bull and Castle Pub at Christchurch. It will be a selection of questions and topics from Comic Books to General Knowledge.

A table of 4 costs €40 and all the con guests will be attending so it’s your chance to get up close and personal for a beer with some of comics best writers and artists. Who, by the way will have their own team and have already boasted to me that they think they’re going to win this. What’s even better is all proceeds from the night are going to charity, so you can’t say fairer than that.

After the quiz we’ve got the venue for the night so we’ll be able to stay on there until the wee hours of the morning in preparation for the con the next day. Anyone interested in coming along should let me know and anyone who can’t get a full team together I’ll hook up with other participants.

Dave Lally Visits Hometown!

Posted 4 years, 7 months ago on May 24, 2006

News reaches us that Dave Lally, ex-patriot Dublinman and current chairman of the European Science Fiction Society will be visiting Dublin early in June. Dave’s fascination with TV show The Prisoner is well known throughout fandom, as is his predilection for the number six. Therefore, his decision to attend the June meeting of the Unlikely Club, which meets on the first Tuesday of the month in the Westmoreland Bar on Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2, seems all the more apt, being as the date is 06.06.06, or the sixth of June 2006. Perhaps there’s even a secret code in date he’s chosen . . .

The club meets from 7.45 PM in the upstairs bar, if you feel like going along. I’ll be in Edinburgh, but tell him I said Hello.

Those of you who have been privileged to receive one of Dave’s terse emails will appreciate the Lally-iser!

Fahrenheit 451 in Limerick

Posted 4 years, 8 months ago on April 27, 2006

Limerick’s Impact Theatre Company are staging the Irish premiere of Ray Bradbury’s adaptation of his classic novel Fahrenheit 451. The dates are May 9th to May 13th next in their theatre at 18, The Crescent, Limerick. Doors open at 7.45 pm.

There is also a fundraiser for the Impact group in Dolan’s on Thursday 27th April, which is unfortunately the same day that this story is published, but if you have a chance to get there to support them, do it…

Updated to add (17th May):
As the original performances of Fahrenheit 451 sold out in record time, Impact are adding three extra dates to the run.

The extra dates are the 18th, 19th and 20th of May. In other words, next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The play starts at the usual time of 8 pm, with doors opening at 7.30pm.

More information about this on their website.

Trinity Book Sale in April

Posted 4 years, 10 months ago on March 27, 2006

It’s that time of the year again, when the Trinity Book Sale looms into view. I’ve been going to this for years now, and it’s simply one of my favourite events of the year. The Trinity College Dublin Friends of the Library hold their annual book sale in the Examination Hall in Front Square, Trinity College, right in the middle of Dublin city. They fill the hall full of books, and, over the course of two and a half days, sell them all off. I’ll be one of the people queuing up from early on Thursday evening, there at least an hour before the doors open at 5 PM, along with many of the great and the good from the second-hand book trade in Ireland.

The sale takes place from 5 PM on Thursday the 6th of April until about 2.30 PM on Saturday the 8th of April. There is an entry fee on Thursday, which also entitles you to a glass of wine, otherwise entry to the sale is free. All remaining book will be half-price on Saturday, and at about 2 PM they’ll auction off the remaining books in lots.

More or less exactly the same information is available on the TCD website.
