I regularly bemoan the demise of the secondhand book trade in Ireland. However, a small glimmer of hope can be found in The 4th Dimension, the gaming shop in the basement of 3 Crow Street in Dublin’s Temple Bar, just downstairs from The 3rd Place, where several shelves of secondhand SF and Fantasy books are now on sale.

Irish bookshop chain Eason’s, in association with TokyoPop, are having a Manga Event in two of their Dublin bookshops on Friday the 14th of July.
The event will take place in the shop in Dundrum Shopping Centre from 12 midday, and in their O’Connell Street shop from 5 PM. In both cases these will be ticketed events, with free tickets available from the respective Customer information Desks.
As well as free gifts, a quiz, and a prize draw, both events will also feature guest appearances by rising Irish Manga creators Sinead Lynch and Leeann Hamilton, runners-up in the recent TokyoPop Rising Stars of Manga competition. They both also featured in a recent issue of Irish comic Havoc 21 with the excellent story Shinimegami Kate agus na Marbh Súile.

Two of Dublin’s comic shops are getting caught up in a Civil War. This is not between themselves, of course, but rather ties in with Marvel Comics’ big summer event, Civil War.
This, for those who don’t know about these things, is where the comic company have a storyline running through all of their titles during the summer, hopefully to boost sales. This time around, Marvel’s summer offering is called Civil War, and pits lots of the Marvel Universe’s characters against one another. By all accounts, this is proving to be phenomenally popular, and both SubCity in Exchequer Street and The 3rd Place in Crow Street are running promotions to add to the excitement.
Robert Curley of SubCity is running a competition for those who pre-order the second issue of the series. In his email newsletter he says:
With the summer on the way Marvel are pulling out the big guns with Civil War. To celebrate its success and to add to the hype we have concocted our own competition for the crossover.
If you pre-book your copy of Civil War #2 you will be automatically entered into a draw to win the following:
1. A 1 in 75 sketch variant cover of that issue, as well as the rest of the Civil War main title and all related tie-ins absolutely free.
Also, the first twenty runners up will receive their copy of Civil War #3 absolutely free.
Rob
Meantime, John Hendrick of The 3rd Place is planning on opening late to allow the public to buy Civil War #2 at midnight. In his weekly email, he says:
The 3rd Place Civil War #2 Midnight Opening
Store Opens 00:01 A.M. 15/06/2006
We would just like to inform you all of our first ever midnight opening in honour of what will be the most talked about comic book of recent years, Civil War #2.
Although we’ve no idea what exactly happens in this issue Mark Millar [the writer of the comic] has gone on record as saying that both this and issue #3 will be HUGE and in anticipation of this we are offering all our customers the chance to get their hands on Civil War #2 at one minute past midnight on the night of Wednesday the 14th of June, going into Thursday the 15th.
The reason why we’re doing this is that the store will be hosting a number of events throughout the year in aid of the Crohn’s Disease lab Millar has started fund raising for. I know a number of people that suffer with this disease and it can be extremely debilitating.
Now here’s the hook, this is the part where we get cash out of you. We’re offering anyone who buys Civil War on the night a chance to get it signed by Mark Millar. We’re going to pay the postage for your copy of Civil War to arrive at Stately Millar Manor and be sent back for the paltry sum of five Euro. Yep that’s right only 5 quid. And that fiver will then be donated to the Crohn’s lab. Obviously the first ten people will receive their goody bags but now everyone has a chance to get their copies signed.
And all for a fiver.
What’s even better is, is that whatever the shop raises from the night I’ll then match and send on. How does that sound?
There’s more information about this on the Millarworld Forum, here.
Both shops run electronic newsletters. You can subscribe to them by sending a mail to the relevant address below:

Taney Books in Dundrum, owned and run by Murrough Lacy, is to close its doors for the last time next weekend. There is little else to say: secondhand bookshops have been closing down all over Dublin, and indeed all over the rest of Ireland and the UK, at a frightening rate over the past ten years. The only places left in Dublin city are the basement of Chapters in Abbey Street and the wonderful Secret Book and Record Store on Wicklow Street, run by the equally wonderful Dermot Carroll, ably assisted by staggeringly knowledgeable Derek Tighe.
Regular readers of this news-site will probably be aware that the demise of the secondhand book trade in Ireland is something of a perennial concern of mine, and the imminent demise of one of my favourites of the few remaining such shops left is a cause of great sadness to me. Murrough does intend to continue to sell books from his stall on Temple Bar Square at the weekends, however.
You might also like to know that the self-same Dermot Carroll of the Secret Book and Record Store mentioned above has just bought many large boxes full of secondhand SF books, which will be appearing on his shelves over the next few days, after they’ve been expertly appraised by ahem my good self…
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Support your local secondhand bookshop! If you don’t they’ll all be gone, and then what’ll we do?

Major US bookshop chain Borders are to open their first Irish shop in the autumn. The 20,000 square-foot, two-storey superstore will be part of the West End Retail Park in Blanchardstown in west County Dublin, and is only the first of several stores the company plans to open in Ireland. The shop will sell not only books, but also music, movies, and periodicals, with an overall collection of over 200,000 different items for sale, and comes complete with a Starbucks coffee shop and a Paperchase stationery shop. There are also plans for various kinds of in-store events, including author signings and free music performances, and the eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted advertisements in the Irish Times for an events manager.
More detailed information can be found in this press release.
Rumour has it that the company’s next shop in Ireland will be as part of the Dundrum Shopping Centre in south County Dublin, so watch this space. In any case, Blanchardstown is about twenty minutes walk from where I’m sitting right now, so I imagine I’ll find myself paying occasional visits when the time comes . . .
