Two Irish comics are on the short list for the prestigious Eagle Awards, the comics industry’s longest established awards, given annually since 1976 to the best comics worldwide, to be presented at the Bristol International Comic Expo on Saturday, May 12 2007.

The two comics nominated are Sancho, produced by 20000 Leagues, and primarily written and drawn by Alan Nolan and Ian Whelan, which is nominated in category 16: Favourite European Comics; and Adam Murray’s Drastic Comics, which is nominated in category 27: Favourite Web-Based Comic.

I asked the nominees for a few words on their nominations. Alan Nolan of 20000 Leagues had this to say:

Ian and I are delighted and thrilled to be nominated. Over the three issues so far we’ve tried to keep the quality as high as possible, and have really enjoyed working with collaborators such as Derek O’Connor (who edits www.blogorrah.com), Charlie Gillespie (Psi Judge Anderson, Sinister Dexter) and the incomparable Davy Francis (Oink!). This year has been going great for us with the launch of the well-received issue 3 and the “small press” story, The Drowned Village, in Judge Dredd Megazine. Winning the Eagle for Favourite European Comic would be the icing on the cake, of course, with competition from such greats as Blacksad and Asterix, who won the category last year. Hopefully this year the Gaul won’t be so indomitable!

Meanwhile, Adam Murray said this:

While I am very grateful for the Eagle nomination, it sets the dangerous precedent that I am somehow doing something worthwhile with Drastic

Polls close at midnight Sunday, April 22, 2007, so get voting!
